Interstitial Gas Analysis
Interstitial gas analysis measures the light elements that sit between the atoms of a metal’s crystal structure, including oxygen, nitrogen, hydrogen, carbon, and sulfur. These elements have a strong effect on strength, ductility, and performance, so they are tightly controlled in aerospace, nuclear, and medical materials.
Luvak determines interstitial elements by combustion and inert gas fusion, reporting results to ASTM and customer limits. Hydrogen is run on the LECO RH404 (ASTM E1447), oxygen and nitrogen on the LECO ON736 and Elementrac ONH-p (ASTM E1409), and carbon and sulfur on the Eltra CS800 (ASTM E1019 and E1941). “LECO” is commonly used as a general term for interstitial testing.
Why Interstitial Analysis Matters
Controls Mechanical Properties
Small changes in interstitials shift strength and ductility.
Critical for Ti and AM Powders
A routine requirement for high-performance materials.
Multiple Elements
Oxygen, nitrogen, hydrogen, carbon, and sulfur in one lab.
